 Watermelon

Nothing is better than a fresh homegrown watermelon. It's a tough row to hoe around here. First, I have to find room in a small greenhouse. Second, I have to hand-pollinate the flowers with a paintbrush every morning for about 20 minutes every morning (delightful, actually, with a nice cup of coffee). Third, the melons then race with the sun to see how fast they can grow before we finally lose enough heat to keep up growth. Fourth, these puppies take a ton of water and fertilizer. At the end, though, we have fabulous watermelons. I've grown New Hampshire Midgets (great stuff) and a variety from Johnny Seeds called Red Harvest (not as good as the NH Midget).
